The NHL is looking for its first-ever female-only player to lead its team.
According to ESPN, the league is “working on a player who is female, of European descent and of good hockey IQ.”
The new woman would be a first for the league, and will not be a starter for the Penguins.
She will be an “experienced player” in the NHL, according to ESPN.
The Penguins announced their plan last year to make the team female-friendly.
The league says that there are currently seven women on the roster.
“I’m looking forward to making this announcement,” Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford said in October.
“We’ve got a lot of young talent that we’ve been looking for, and this is a way to provide an opportunity to give those young people a chance to have a shot at being successful.”
The NHL has been working to make its team more inclusive, and has recently launched a campaign called “The Girls Are In” aimed at increasing female participation in the sport.
“We are a great example of a female-driven league,” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said at the start of the campaign.
“Women’s hockey is growing in leaps and bounds and we have a great opportunity to continue that success.
We are confident in the ability of our players to thrive and contribute to that growth.”
