Designing logos is a crucial skill for many organisations, whether they are small, medium or large.
Here we look at how to design and print a logo that reflects your organisation’s values and mission.
The graphic designer is often the person who creates the look and feel of the logo, so how do you get it right?
Here are some tips to help you on your way.1.
Design for the web and mobile First, consider your audience.
What is the primary audience of your website?
Are people coming to your website for the same reasons they are coming to other websites, or do they want to find out more about your organisation?
Are they interested in buying the product you’re selling?
Is it relevant to their lifestyle?
For some organisations, the answer to this question will be ‘yes’.
For others, it will be an entirely different matter.
If you’re targeting the digital age, the main audience may be someone who uses a smartphone, tablets or other digital devices to access the internet, but the web itself is likely to be a bigger draw.
For many organisations looking to grow, a logo needs to communicate the brand’s values to a wider audience.2.
Create a logo from scratch The design process can take months, and it’s hard to keep the creative juices flowing.
A design process starts with a sketch, then a sketch and finalising the final image.
A good logo will look great on a website or as part of a branding campaign.
For example, if you’re looking to improve your organisation branding, it could be a great idea to design an organisation’s logo with an image of a horse, or a fish, or even a horse with its tail outstretched.3.
Choose a colour and font The logo can be made in one of four colours, but this is not a great start if you are creating a logo with only one colour.
If it’s your first time using a logo colour, look for something that matches your organisation colour scheme, or colour scheme you prefer.
If your logo is made up of more than one colour, consider using different colours.
If the logo is a new design, try and choose a colour that matches the style of the new logo.
This will make it easier for people to recognise the colour you’re creating, and also allows the design to stand out more.4.
Set a clear colour scheme The colour scheme of a logo should not be too specific, but should reflect the value you are trying to convey.
Some organisations are looking for a simple white colour for their logo.
Others, like the Green Party, like to use a red colour to emphasise their values.
In this case, it’s also a good idea to have a clear visual guide as to what colours you want to use.5.
Set the font size It’s important that your logo font matches the design of the website, and should not have too many letters and/or spaces.
Try and use a font that is 12pt, or smaller, for your logo.6.
Create an image with the logo It’s always a good practice to use as much colour as you can, so make sure you don’t use too much on your logo, especially if you have an eye for the subtle colour scheme.
If colour is not your main focus, you can create a secondary image with your logo to illustrate its value.
For some logo designs, you may want to add a little bit of text on the image to tell people what you’re doing with the colour.7.
Select a logo template This can be a tricky task, but if you’ve got a few years experience, you should be able to come up with something that works for you.
Here’s how to select a template for your website or logo.1 .
Create your own website template for use on your own site.
Make sure you get the right font, colour and size.2 .
Add the logo to the page and use it on your website.3 .
Add your logo on your main website and your website’s content.
If you have a website template that you’ve designed, upload it and use the template on your site.
It will help to make sure it looks good on your home page.4 .
Share your logo with your friends and family.
Your friends and loved ones will love to see your logo together.5 .
Add it to social media sites, like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and so on.6 .
Add a link to your logo in your site’s search results, and encourage people to use your logo by sharing your design on social media.7 .
Your website or website’s logo can also be used as a banner, or as a contact point on your social media pages.8 .
Link to your blog and/ or blog posts on your Facebook and Twitter pages.9 .
Show your logo and the logo on the homepage of your organisation, or in the footer of your social networks.10 . Tell
