When it comes to the design profession, there's a long and complicated history of "trendy" and "disruptive" design. But a new survey of more than 1,000 designers has found that a lot of the current focus on the latter is actually misguided, and the former is the wrong direction."It's easy to think about design as something that only needs to be used in the context of your brand," says Jason Luscomb...
Graphic design jobs are growing in popularity, but there’s still a lot of room for improvement, a new report by the National Geographic Black Graphic Design Team says.
Black graphic designers are increasingly used in the design of corporate websites, corporate signage, and social media.
The team looked at some of the top employers hiring black designers to design for the 2020 election.
Graphic design companies are looking for candidates with an interest in the social, political, and economic issues facing the Black community.
Black designers are particularly important for organizations that have a strong connection to people of color, the report says.
“Black designers have been in the game for a long time, and they’re not going away,” said Ben Hulsey, an associate professor of digital media at Syracuse University.
“But we still need to continue to make the case for their inclusion in the industry.”
Black designers were used to being overlooked in design departments because of the historically high cost of being a black person.
However, as more people of colour enter the workforce, they have begun to be seen as a necessary resource in many of the industry’s design processes.
Black design students have also been making strides in their representation in the field.
According to the National Center for Educational Statistics, the number of African-American and Latino students in the U.S. working in design has risen from about 15 percent in 1999 to more than 40 percent in 2015.
“For us, the biggest change is the visibility of black designers and students in design,” Hulson said.
“In the past, people didn’t even think about the opportunities for students of color in the world of design.
The fact that they are now included in these larger design projects, it shows us that these opportunities exist.”
“It’s just another part of what I call the white privilege narrative,” Hahng said.
In fact, Hulsson said, “I think there’s a lot more to be said about the need to include black designers in the larger design industry.”
The report also notes that the majority of white graphic designers in America are employed by larger design companies, including the likes of Adobe, Apple, and Nike.
The report states that designers can make a positive impact in design by being creative and innovative.
The Black Graphic Designer Association of America has recommended that designers should not be considered “white,” but that they should be encouraged to apply for jobs in the black community.
The group has also recommended that organizations should use more black and minority ethnic designers.
Black and Latino graphic designers can work in any industry, and should be considered candidates for jobs as designers or as software engineers, the group says.
The NGA also suggests that businesses consider hiring black and Latino designers to work in areas that are less well represented in design, such as digital marketing, web design, and website design.
Hulays says that when the time comes to hire a black designer, the team has to be prepared to work with them on their own, and to understand the job that they’re going to be working on.
The company has also launched a program that encourages students to apply to jobs at the Black Graphic Agency and Black Graphic Lab.
“We’re not just going to look at a resume, but what’s the person that’s really qualified, the person with the work ethic, the guy that can really bring something to the table,” Hohng said, adding that the experience is invaluable.
“The job that we have with them, it’s really valuable, and we have a great opportunity for them.”
This article has been updated with additional comments from Ben Hulssey, a Syracuse University associate professor, and Hultson, an assistant professor of media and communications.
National Geographic will be sharing the full report with the public tomorrow, Feb. 28, 2021.
