When your career depends on it, it’s a big deal.
But when it comes to making money for yourself and your family, your personal brand, and the future of your career, it can be very difficult to navigate.
That’s where creative graphic designer Jody Moxley comes in.
She’s spent the past six years working to turn her professional work into a business.
She founded the online marketplace graphicdesign2020, which provides freelancers with templates and online tools to create viral campaigns that can be monetized through Facebook Ads.
Her goal is to help designers and designers-in-training find success in their career and in life.
We talked to Moxleys founder about how her business model has evolved, how it’s helped her find new clients, and how she plans to continue to help others find success.
How did you start your career?
Jody Moxyley, graphic designer: I graduated college in 2013.
It was my first full-time job.
I got an internship at the New York Times.
After graduating, I started freelance design.
Then I started a design company that specialized in advertising campaigns.
And now I have my own business, Graphic Design 2020.
I started my first business in 2006 as a student and was actually a freelancer at the time.
I really enjoyed the work, but it wasn’t very fulfilling.
I would get to work with clients, but there wasn’t much I could do for myself.
I didn’t have much of a sense of what my own work was good for.
And so I wanted to start a company to help people get more work out of their work.
I started Graphic Design 2019 in 2011 and then Graphic Design 2021 in 2014.
And Graphic Design 2022 in 2017.
When you started your business, did you have any preconceived notions about what your work would look like?
I didn and still don’t have a clear idea of what I wanted my career to look like.
I had no idea what the job would look a few years ago.
I thought I wanted a career in marketing.
But I don’t really see myself working for anyone other than myself, and that’s why I was so passionate about starting this business.
I’m an engineer, and I have this amazing ability to build products, so I thought it was the right thing to do.
I’ve always wanted to be an entrepreneur, so it was a natural progression for me.
It’s like being a musician: You know you can’t go back to playing guitar, so you go and do something else.
And when I started this company, I just started thinking about my future career.
I never thought I would make it in this business and then become a business owner.
I think the most challenging thing for designers is that you have to figure out how to be creative.
You have to understand what the market is looking for and what the audience is looking to get from your design.
It can be pretty tricky to figure that out, but once you get to know the market and the audience, you can start to make better decisions.
What’s your biggest challenge working in the graphic design industry?
I think it’s just being on the front lines of creating a market for my work.
It takes a lot of courage and persistence to create these viral campaigns.
Sometimes you have clients that will buy from you if they think your work is awesome, and other times they will go elsewhere.
It definitely takes a good team to do it.
What’s more, it requires a lot more communication.
If you’re in a team, you don’t get to talk to your clients or your clients’ clients and you can see their eyes go blank.
But if you’re on your own, you have no idea.
It is such a collaborative process.
What are your biggest challenges in becoming a business leader?
It’s hard to find clients.
People ask me how I’m going to find new customers, and there’s a lot I don�t know about it.
So I’m kind of struggling with that, too.
But once you do find a client, you go from there.
I find the most difficult part is that I don.
There are times when I think about all the people who would love to work for me and who I have to get along with.
It really takes a team to make it work.
And if you don�ts have a team and you don?t have a vision, you won�t succeed.
So it�s really hard.
How do you find new friends?
How do I make connections?
It is really difficult.
It�s the most fun part of the job.
What I learned is that people are drawn to people who have a lot to say.
They are drawn by a lot and I can connect with them.
I think people have to feel connected to each other.
I can’t help them do that. But that�s part of what makes it fun.
